Executive Offsites
Overview
Individual talent and motivation on a team can be high, yet the team still doesn’t reach it’s full potential. Two findings from social psychology help explain why:
- Team alignment affects performance more than individual talent: Teams with medium talent but high alignment outperform teams with high talent and medium alignment. Why? Because high alignment unlocks the honesty, safety, and candor that improve decision-making and deepen coordination under pressure.
- It’s more important to decrease team friction than increase team motivation: When friction is high, external motivation doesn’t stick. The best performance comes from “flow,” not burnout. People need tools to convert friction into flow, and not simply ignore, justify, or endure it.
What Makes This Offsite Different
Most offsites focus on the “individual” and “positive” sides of behavior, believing that these will compound into stronger team performance.
But that’s not how teams work.
It’s the team’s “collective” and “negative” behaviors that drive or derail performance:
- Is accountability uneven?
- Where does communication break down?
- Do people lack autonomy and recognition?
- Do they feel at risk giving and receiving honest feedback?
Autonomy, feedback, and communication are team qualities, not individual qualities. But leaders are rarely given the framework and toolkit to develop these strongly across the team. Instead, they are given KPIs, and told that they need to motivate individuals to drive growth.
But KPIs are lagging indicators — and team alignment is what drives or derails them.
This program helps serious leaders work on the team level to improve the forces that matter most for performance under pressure.
